The Mandarin Orange is an early type of citrus that is one of the parents of many modern citrus tree varieties. ![]() Even if you live in colder regions, the Owari Satsuma is a small tree that will happily grow in a pot so that you can bring your tree indoors during winter. This means that if you live as far north as eastern North Carolina, throughout the South, most of Texas and all along the West Coast, you can grow the beautiful and delicious ‘Christmas Orange’ right in your own garden and bring baskets of fruit indoors to celebrate the holiday season. It will tolerate a few hours of frost down to 15 0F, so it can be grown in zone 8, as well as in zones 9 and 10. The tree only grows to around 12 feet tall so it can be grown in a small garden and it is a very hardy citrus, being almost as hardy as the Nagami Kumquat but much better for eating. They ripen just before and during the Christmas season, making this the perfect fruit for holiday celebrations. The fruits are deliciously sweet, seedless and very easy to peel. The Owari Satsuma is the highest-quality variety of Mandarin orange available. ![]() Outdoor trees will usually be free of pests. When growing outdoors, choose a sunny spot, and water whenever the soil has become party dry. Be sure that the pot you use has a drainage hole and plant it in a well-drained potting soil. It will happily spend the winter in a cold porch or any other cool, well-lit spot. Grow it a pot in colder areas, bringing it indoors from a little before the first frost to early spring. Grow your Owari Satsuma outdoors in zone 8, 9 or 10.
